El Reflejo/ Sol Y Canto was created as an alternative media outlet that covers news, politics, culture, and the arts of the Chican@/ Latin@ community. The mission is to raise awareness about the issues and to provide a space where the community can participate in dialogue and present their work.
The publication was developed in a joint effort that came together as one. Sol Y Canto was developed to provide a space for the community at large to engage, true to the arts, in an expressive and informative dialogue.
El Reflejo was created out of the Latin@ Dialogue (of Fall 2005) that were conducted at CSULB in order to develop solutions to improve the rentention and graduation rates of Chican@/ Latin@s at CSULB. Out of these talks, students, falculty, and staffdecided that in order to improve the sense on inclusion for Chican@/ Latin@ students at CSULB, there would be a need for a sort of representative media outlet to be used to address important issues and engage in dialogue.
